The American Academy of Independent Studies, Inc. (AAIS) was incorporated in 1984 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. At this time, the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Licensed Schools accepted AAIS's application for licensure to conduct a private correspondence school. In 1995, AAIS was purchased by NLKK, Inc., a diversified educational company. In 1999, AAIS was acquired by Direct Learning Systems, Inc., a continuing education company.
Beginning in 1985, all training programs developed by AAIS have been submitted to the American Culinary Federation Educational Institute (ACFEI) in Saint Augustine, Florida for review and approval. Courses must meet their high standards for continuing education requirements.
In 1993, the American Academy of Independent Studies also received approval of its training materials from the American School Food Service Association (currently the School Nutrition Association), Alexandria, Virginia, and the International Food Service Executives Association, Margate, Florida. Additional approvals have been secured from the Dietary Managers Association, American Dietetic Association, and the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
The American Academy of Independent Studies has expanded upon its original training programs by developing courses on the food service industry and related subjects. Some of these courses include Management, Sanitation, Supervision, Nutrition, Computers, Cost Control, and Time Management.
The American Academy of Independent Studies is located at 218 Main Street, Emmaus, PA 18049. AAIS operates year-round, and students may apply at any time.
